Salt Mine
The Salt Mine in Wieliczka is the oldest European mine still operating today, and an international tourist attraction. It has been visited for several centuries. In 1774, first stairs for visitors were built. Presently, tourists may visit an underground route of 2 km length, which leads through post-exploitation chambers, underground lakes, a museum of antique mining equipment and tools, as well as chapels decorated with salt statues. The greatest and the largest is St.Kinga's Chapel, located over 100 meters deep underground, which can house 500 people. In 1978 the Salt Mine in Wieliczka was entered onto the UNESCO World Heritage List.
